Unrealistic standards 94

posted Sunday, 11 May 2008

Ali

Hollywood, TV, the media and the music industry set unrealistic standards marketed towards what they think people want.

I think listening to those sources is getting our society in a lot of trouble in terms of what detrimental choices people are making.

At some point we have to snap out of it.

Hollywood doesn't set the standards! They do enormous amounts of research to learn what people want. We buy into Hollywood because they give us what we want.

Stop blaming the media for the way we are. We evolved this way over millions of years because it was what worked best for us. Maybe instead of fighting it, we could understand it and learn to work WITH it.

They are responsible for propogating IMAGES of what they THINK people WANT.

Can you deny that this has at least a subliminal effect on the masses, especially the youth?

So teenagers who are just trying to figure out life consistently see these images put out there for them to identify with, it's society telling them what they're supposed to want and/or strive to be when they haven't even figured that out for themselves yet. I'm not blaming the media, etc. for everything, yes they do take a slice out of life and blow it up out of proportion but my point is, they plaster it all on your TV and movie screens, magazines, etc. It is a misrepresentation of how things are and how people are. The images you see overexposed are not even representative of most people. Grown people who already have established who they are and want to be aren't as influenced as young people who are still impressionable. For that group, the media, hollywood and music industry are setting a standard of comparison, they (the people) tend to look to these images as the gold standard if they don't know any better. The conglomerates know what they are doing it is subliminal mass marketing and brand advertising but the people may or may not be aware that these images are not necessrally in their best interests. At the end of the day somebody is trying to get in your ear to get you to buy their product or endorse their business.

That's a self-refuting argument. You can't blame "the media" for setting a standard, or for telling people what to be, and then later in the same paragraph admit that "at the end of the day somebody is trying to get you to buy their product".

They're showing what people want to see. That's what sells face cleaners and movie tickets and exercise machines and diet pills.

They're not trying to set a false standard... they're tempting you with a very real standard and leaving it to insecure human nature to do the rest.
